chairman-board of directors

Ambassador Mathias Meinrad Chikawe

The Chairman of Petrogas Field Services Limited is Ambassador Mathias Meinrad Chikawe who retired honorably from the Tanzanian public service in 2019.

A decade ago, Petrogas transitioned out of a manufacturer’s representation business model into a customer-centric enterprise. As a result, Petrogas is now well-established in the industry, with an accepted value-proposition and a loyal customer base.

As its Chairman, Chikawe is strategically repositioning Petrogas to become Tanzania’s leading local manufacturer and supplier of a vast array of Oil & Gas products, services, and engineered solutions. These include precision machined components and assemblies such as connectors, fasteners, sealants, fittings, hoses, regulators, washers, accessories, and vehicle conversion kits—all custom-designed to increase the utilization of natural gas in all its various forms particularly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG).

Engineered to reduce imports thereby deepening and broadening Tanzania’s Local Content, the Petrogas industrial manufacturing output will serve Oil & Gas export markets throughout the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries.

Operating at the helm of Petrogas, Chikawe is changing the company’s market position, brand image, and target audience to better align with market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscape–ultimately aiming to build enduring performance and relevance.

board MEMBER

Caroline Clara Mrema

A seasoned economist, planner and marketer with over 20 years of experience working in the airline industry, Caroline Clara Mrema is a long-established entrepreneur in education, real estate, logistics, clearing & forwarding, transit cargo haulage, and tourism industries.

At Petrogas, our key metric for success is lifetime customer value, which we expect to be at least double the cost of acquiring each customer. This approach ensures that we are building businesses with genuine customer value, rather than simply chasing immediate returns. We understand that for a new venture to scale effectively, it must not only attract customers, but also, offer products that genuinely meet their needs and generate lasting demand.

That’s where Ms. Mrema comes in—a bold risk-taker who is adept at opportunity identification, business risk assessment, business development, and customer acquisition. A business-minded former executive of a public corporation, Ms. Mrema believes that translating the early excitement of new ventures into structured milestones and deliverables is essential for sustained progress.

Ms. Mrema espouses a sprint-based cadence—focusing on key parameters that enable rapid execution without sacrificing quality or long-term viability. Ms. Mrema understands that one common pitfall in business is the unrealistic expectation that new ventures will break even within a few months, which is often not the case—even in fast-moving, agile markets.

Ms. Mrema knows from her experiences in the public and private sectors that companies that set such aggressive timelines risk prematurely abandoning promising ventures. While some businesses may appear unprofitable in the early stages, they can scale successfully in the long run, while others may fail to gain traction.

As Board Member, Ms. Mrema helps Petrogas identify concentric business ventures with true growth potential by taking a more nuanced approach—i.e. focusing on midstream metrics that go beyond short-term financial outcomes. With the assistance of Ms. Mrema as a technical Board Member, Petrogas prioritizes customer-focused indicators over vanity metrics such as initial sales figures or superficial growth rates.

Ms. Mrema is a former employee of Air Tanzania Corporation (ATC). Based on performance, Ms. Mrema rose steadily from the position of Corporate Planning Officer to Senior Corporate Planning Officer. With increased performance, she was promoted again to Corporate Planning Manager, Marketing Manager, and finally to the position of Director of Corporate Planning under the Managing Director.

During her distinguished career with the State-Owned-Enterprise (SOE), she developed mission-critical expertise in coordinating the airline business with the parent Ministry—the Treasury, Central Bank, Legal Corporation, Aircraft Manufacturers, IATA, ICAO, SADC, EAC, AFRAA, the World Bank and other international financial institutions.

Some of Ms. Mrema’s prolific assignments and key positions while at ATC include being the Head of Marketing, Acting Secretary to the ATC Board of Directors, and Head of the ATC privatization team, which worked closely with consultants of a World Bank affiliate—International Finance Corporation (IFC) under the guidance of the Presidential Parastatal Sector Reform Commission (PSRC).

Ms. Mrema’s deep-rooted experience in the airline industry was bolstered by her attachment programs at various aircraft manufacturers in Amsterdam, Holland and Toulouse, France where she undertook a feasibility study on a five-year re-equipment program.

Since her retirement over a decade ago, Ms. Mrema has served on several public and private Boards of Directors in the position of Board Director / Member. These include Air Tanzania Corporation (ATC), Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), Galileo by Travel Port International (based in Atlanta, Georgia), Freight Meridien Company Ltd, and Association of Women in Tourism Tanzania.

Other similar engagements include being a Member of the Economic Association of Tanzania, Commonwealth Forum in Sydney, Australia, and the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA).

On the academic front, Ms. Mrema possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Post Graduate Diploma in Transport Economics from Granfield Institute of Technology, UK, and a Master’s Program in Business Administration at ESAMI.

Other relevant training and staff development programs attended by Ms. Mrema include a Diploma in Airline Operations from Granfield Institute of Technology, UK, Corporate Planning at the Aer Lingus Training Institute in Dublin, Ireland, Strategic Planning & Fleet Evaluation at the Boeing Airplane Group facility in Seattle, Washington, Management Skills at IATA in Singapore, and Fleet Management at Boeing Air Mauritius.
